Description of CE Program/Activity
 AM Breakout Session 1 (Concurrent):Deaf Blind 101 with Peter Porter (Repeats in the afternoon): Exploring the effects of dual sensory impairments and the impacts of DeafBlindness (DB) on psycho-social, communication, and travel. This session will also address techniques for cane use, communication, and sign-communication in the community. Through active learning, participants will create their own functional signs and leave with functional tools to use in the field.Take Care of Their Heart: Approaching Vision Loss Through a Grief Lens with Dr. Jennifer Rocks (Repeats in the afternoon): This session will also address concepts of mindfulness, Compassion Fatigue and techniques for self-care for professionals serving persons with disabilities and their families. Service providers face challenges in a system where support and resources are limited and stress saps energy, creativity, and morale. Learn how to reduce power struggles; use strategies that lower stress; and energize yourself while empowering students through validation of their process of vision loss.11:45-12:45 PM Lunch, Annual AER Business Meeting, & Elections1:00-3:45 PM Breakout Session 2 (Concurrent - Repeat of AM Breakout Session 1):Deaf Blind 101 Take Care of Their Heart: Approaching Vision Loss Through a Grief Lens 4:00-5:00 PM General SessionMedical Aspects of Vision Loss with Dr. D Ostroph: Dr. D Ostroph will speak to the importance of collaboration between eye care professionals, teachers of the visually impaired, and their families and caregivers. This session also addresses common causes of visual impairment, cutting edge treatments, and future advancements for addressing conditions in babies, adolescents and adults.5:00-6:00 PM General SessionPanel Discussion: Transition to College, Work, and Beyond.
