Description of CE Program/Activity
This blend of asynchronous online presentations using animations and video to illustrate important concepts and textbook reading allows self-paced learning of the core knowledge. The trainee then applies their knowledge in an interactive webinar. Trainees will have the tools and will be encouraged to immediately apply the material clinically as they take the course. The course of study is used by the Low Vision Rehabilitation of Canada to train new therapists and we are developing a 10 session version for other blind rehab professionals . Maximum class size of 7 assures individualized instruction. Trainees usually read a chapter, view optional presentations on more difficult material, take a test then prepare for the webinar by applying the information to real clinical videotaped cases. The webinars are generally NOT lectures but are discussions based on the assignments and questions generated by the participants as well as live webcams of demonstrations. Although evidence based, with incorporation of accepted visual and optical science, the instructors are experienced therapists who teach practical skills not a lot of theory and jargon. Participants will be encouraged to purchase about $75 of evaluation materials and some optical devices (cost $200-300) to try out, all of which will be useful in clinical practice. The instruction is designed to be immediately applicable after the first 4 classes. Mentors of trainees may attend webinars at no cost by prior arrangement. This course covers the required material for ACVREP certification for low vision therapists and AOTA Specialty Certification in Low Vision. (SCLV).
