Description of CE Program/Activity
This workshop will highlight ways in which educators can develop and integrate lite- and lo-tech Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) systems for students who are blind/visually impaired with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness. The unique needs of a VI learner who is an early communicator will be considered in the context of classroom-based AAC interventions to increase engagement, support meaningful communication routines, and build early and age-appropriate literacy skills. Video, photo, and hard-copy examples will be provided as educators consider both receptive and expressive AAC forms in the context of engaging, early literacy and communication activities across the school day.Topics:The Early Communication Needs of Students with Visual Impairment and Multiple Disabilities, including Deafblindness Choosing practical AAC goals and Targets Setting and Sharing AAC Topics Ideas at Work: Early Literacy and Communica-tion Examples using Alternative Forms Prompt Independence: Fading Support for Early Communicators with VI
