This two day session will introduce teachers ofchildren with visual impairments to the I-M-ABLE,and also provide background information on various aspects of teaching braillereading in general. The materials are designed for those who work with childrenwho are not making progress in braille reading, particularly those withadditional cognitive impairments from mild to moderate to severe. The workshop will provide for hands-onteaching and learning experience with the braille code utilizing the variouscomponents of the I-M-ABLE. Eachcomponent of the approach will be described and modeled. These componentsinclude getting started with literacy instruction in braille, selecting KeyVocabulary Words or Phrases, teaching tactile perception and tracking skills,teaching writing, teaching phonics and letter recognition and contractions,writing and reading stories, and expanding children s languagedevelopment. Teachers will gainexperience in teaching each other how to read braille using the various componentsof I-M-ABLE. Each participant will learnhow to create materials for another participant for each component, and how toread (tactilely) several key vocabulary words, and a short repetitive storythat they will write with their teachers. |
