Sensorimotor learning is foundational to the very young child. Information will be shared on the qualitative and quantitative effects of early onset blindness/visual impairment upon the developing child s social-emotional, cognitive, play, and motor development. Early attention to the impact of early onset visual impairment upon these developmental domains will be detailed. The use of play-based interventions will be highlighted.Description: The National Association for the Education of Young Children and National Early Literacy Panel both provide clear guidance on the importance and key elements of emergent literacy development in young children. Research supports four broad fundamental tenets of emergent literacy skill development in order for children to move forward to conventional literacy. These components include oral language development, phonological awareness, print/braille concepts that include alphabetic awareness, and background knowledge /concept development. Each of these areas can be influenced by early onset visual impairment to varying degrees. The session will highlight the following: (a) national recommendations for emergent literacy support to young children, (b) key strategies that enhance emergent literacy concept and skill development specifically for young children who are blind/visually impaired, and (c) national emergent literacy resources and support tools. |
