Providing Orientation & Mobility services to adults with intellectual disability who have vision loss can be incredibly exciting, fulfilling, and challenging, especially for instructors who have not worked previously with individuals who have multiple impairments. Join in and learn about effective strategies for navigating the adult service system, considerations for instruction, the important role of caregivers, and how to turn your questions into confidence. Based on services provided through the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind/Department of Developmental Services Partnership Project for Orientation & Mobility / Low Vision Services, many resources will be shared including an assessment format, a service delivery tool (draft), advice from experienced COMS colleagues, technique variations, web resources, and a training model to use with support staff. Lecture, video, and group discussion will all be incorporated into the day. You ll leave inspired and with a detailed plan for approach to address needs. |
