It is commonly thought that the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) idea of medical coverage and treatment could not be conducive to specialty care. But although I cannot comment on the other plans, Kaiser Permanente of Southern California has shown a consistent and unwavering support to growing the field of low vision rehabilitation. I have seen in less than 10 years, a two-fold growth in the number of optometrists who see low vision patients. There is a variation in the level of care among medical centers, like any other system, but it encompasses 13 medical centers in Southern California, in an area that is larger than a number of other states. |
