Description of CE Program/Activity
This 2.5 day (18 clock hour) course. The course is divided into three parts. The first part will involve a Resource Evening featuring presentations specific to Colorado services and supports for children and youth who are blind/visually impaired, their families, and/or service providers. The second section will feature a full-day presentation on the revised Learning Media Assessment by Dr. M. Cay Holbrook. The decision to teach braille or print to a student who is visually impaired is an individual decision that should be revisited on an ongoing (at least yearly) basis in order to monitor student progress in the current media and adjust as required. Learning Media Assessment is a data-driven process that supports educational teams as they holistically consider a student s strengths, challenges and academic progress. This workshop will include a presentation discussing the updated forms and processes of the most recent version of Learning Media AssessmentThe third section will feature a full-day training by Rachel Schles on Student Portfolios and Project Based Learning: An Approach for Implementing Meaningful Instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum. Pairing the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) with project based learning forms an ideal platform to teach students with visual impairments. Centered on student specific needs, these projects teach students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills around the implications of their visual impairments. Attendees will be introduced to the basics of project based learning, conducting thorough ECC assessments and developing appropriate data-based ECC IEP goals for students based on the students individual strengths and needs. Sample case studies will be presented for students with visual impairments, including deafblindness or mild/moderate additional disabilities in elementary and secondary school. Practical tips will be shared for individualized education plan goals. After reviewing the process and
