The standard techniques of orientation and mobility were designed for persons who were blind and hearing. The modifications and adaptations of these techniques are the challenge of the O&M Specialist working with consumers who are deaf-blind. This seminar includes strategies for curriculum modifications and supplements, communicating with the public, effectively working with interpreters, and street crossing techniques for travelers who are deaf-blind. An overview of the deaf-blind population and providing services to all consumers with dual sensory loss are included with an emphasis on travelers who use signed language as their primary communication mode. Insights into deaf-blind culture and community will be explored. Participants will acquire the tools, strategies, and resources needed to teach a comprehensive O&M program to deaf-blind adults. |
