This course will provide conceptual as well as practical information relevant to the most rapidly growing sensory rehabilitation population: Older adults with combined vision and hearing loss. The session will include demographics and patient characteristics, considerations about the use and usability of assistive devices for this population, as well as psychosocial perspectives around stigmatization. The practical component of this course will focus on the systematic screening and identification of sensory impairments in older adults, for the purpose of appropriate referral and practical tips around communication and accommodations will be discussed. Resources and assistance from the Helen Keller National Center will be made available. |
