Description of CE Program/Activity
Two different topics will be addressed during this course: Retinopathy of Prematurity: 74 Years of Principles, Trials, Cases and Clinical Outcomes; Paul Weishaar, MD Course Description: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a serious health concern with continued risk of blindness and high cost of acute neonatal and chronic long-term care. Through careful classification and treatment studies, retinopathy of prematurity incidence and unfavorable outcomes can be reduced. The Association between People with Gardner Syndrome (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis) and CHRPE (Congenital Hypertrophy of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium); Paul Weishaar, MD; Brent Deibert, MS3 Course Description: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an extremely devastating inheritable disease which is passed on in an autosomal dominant fashion. Patients affected by FAP develop numerous colonic polyps that predispose them to a 100% risk of developing colorectal cancer given a long enough time line. Diagnosis of colorectal cancer in teenage patients is common with FAP. Gardner syndrome is a variant of FAP that is defined by the characteristics intrinsic to FAP, but also extracolonic features unique to this variant. One of the many extracolonic features present in Gardner syndrome is a variant of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE). There are multiple variants of CHRPE, most of which are benign and have no association with Gardner syndrome. This course will explore the characteristics of the variant of CHRPE that is related to Gardner syndrome and the characteristics of the variants that are not.
