The Mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is DeafBlind to live and work in his or her community of choice. Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1967, HKNC is the only organization of its kind—providing training and resources exclusively to people age 16 and over who have combined vision and hearing loss. 

We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as the Director of our Information, Research, and Professional Learning (IRPD) department! The Director, IRPD is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of professional learning projects including web based module development, professional learning seminars, tailored and customized professional learning opportunities and visits. The Director oversees the Information Services department, professionals and consumer family requests for information, and writing and dissemination of HKNC articles and publications. The Director coordinates regular training events, research, information dissemination and implements grants to maximize professional learning and product development and dissemination.

  • Develops guidelines, processes and protocols for HKNC’s professional learning activities. Monitors and coordinates a continuous calendar of professional learning events throughout the year. 
  • Identifies and cultivates partners including agencies, organizations, universities, and individuals for seminars, conferences, product development and other professional learning opportunities.
  • Negotiates training and consulting contracts. 
  • Partners with accrediting entities to offer CEUs for professional training courses. 
  • Oversees and develops curriculum and professional learning materials for web based courses, seminars and other national training events in collaboration with national partners and all HKNC departments.  
  • Oversee HKNC’s development and provision of information on best practices and current training topics regarding DeafBlind vocational rehabilitation. Directs materials, curriculum and course development by addressing priorities of DeafBlind individuals, professionals and families
  • Maintains data of outcomes of all training activities and information dissemination for federal and grant funding sources, reports on training and grant outcomes and research initiatives.
  •  Offers guidance and support to the development of the HKNC website and Learning Management system. Guides and supports media materials generated by HKNC’s Public Relations firm and Coordinator of Information Services. 
  • Manage and oversee staff and training activities of the IRPD department including production of HKNC’s newsletters; braille training for staff, and braille transcription services.


  • Master’s degree in Special Education or Rehabilitation or related field required. 
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience working in the field of DeafBlindness. 
  • Must possess strong writing and organizational skills. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs (Word, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint and Excel), basic video editing skills, photo editing skills, Adobe Pro, and videoconferencing programs such as Zoom required. Must have some knowledge of accessibility guidelines for presentations, documents and, formats for on-line learning. 
  • Knowledge of DeafBlind culture, DeafBlind communities, priorities, trends, etiologies and cultural diversity. 
  • Must have excellent leadership ability and experience. Must have the ability to “think outside the box”, provide new opportunities, enhance change and improve organization to lead and excel as premiere resource on DeafBlind rehabilitation to service providers nationwide.
