The Role

This is a very diverse General Manager position where you will provide leadership and operational management of the organisation, supporting the board in day to day management functions, maximising opportunities to achieve the strategic aims, maintaining a sound financial position to ensure sustainability, while leading a small team of six and being very involved in day to day operations. Other duties include:

  • Participate in board meetings as General Manager and Secretary
  • Ensuring the organisation complies with all legal, financial and statutory requirements and regulations
  • Through strong leadership, building an effective team of staff and volunteers
  • Develop collaborative opportunities with other vision care providers, as well as maintaining profession networks with the wider community
  • Work with the Fundraising Manager in building and maintain relationships with donors
  • Attending conferences and utilising to raise awareness of MDNZ, and build new stakeholder relationships
  • Advance awareness and reduce impact of MDNZ within the New Zealand environment

Skills & Experience

This positions requires a passionate and talented individual that is committed to our cause, hard work, resilience, an innovative approach and commitment to best practice. You’ll be a strategic thinker and able to hold your own at a senior level, but also not afraid to be hands on with the day to day operations of the organisation.

The ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships is essential to this role, and pivotal to the growth of our organisation. You’ll have strong interpersonal skills, able to engage high value donors, but also equally comfortable instructing a volunteer. You will bring:

  • Strategic and organisational leadership experience, and a demonstrated track record of delivery performance and growth
  • Ideally experience within the not-for-profit sector
  • Knowledge of, or a personal connection to macular degeneration would be an advantage
  • Strong stakeholder, negotiation skills, including the ability to influence
  • Be able to develop highly effective working relationships by building credibility, respect and rapport with internal stakeholders and external networks
  • Have proven leadership skills with a ‘hands on’ approached, demonstrating your ability to motivate and inspire excellence within your team
  • Calm under pressure and the ability to prioritise
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical skills

The successful candidate will be provided with a thorough handover by the current General Manager.

With macular degeneration (MD) being the leading cause of blindness in NZ for the over 50 age group, our vision to provide awareness, education and support to those who suffer from MD.
