Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M)

The Conklin Center for the Blind is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to provide individualized training to our clients who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities. The O&M instructor will teach clients to travel safely and independently.

Since 1979 the Conklin Center’s mission has been to help adults who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities become independent and contributing citizens. On average, 85% of graduates annually become employed, live in homes of their own choosing or continue their education. Our services include: Independent Living, Financial Literacy, Employment, Assistive Technology, and Orientation & Mobility. We are seeking an experienced rehabilitation professional who shares our passion for providing services to our clients.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be familiar with the blindness community and professional resources, as well as standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the vision rehabilitation field.
  • Excellent report writing, and oral presentation to team members, clients and their families.
  • Evaluate clients for skill level and make recommendations for services.
  • Working experience with databases and computer skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with good judgment, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, and ability to handle confidential material.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team and manage multiple tasks.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited university which meets the ACVREP 13 core domain areas.
  • Must have or be eligible for ACVREP certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
  • Dual certification O&M and VRT or O&M and TVI preferred.
  • Knowledge in deaf education and/or American Sign Language preferred.
