Job Title:  Vision Rehabilitation Therapist

Reports To:  Vice President of Programs                                                Department:  Rehabilitation

FLSA Status:  Exempt                                                                                     Location:  Ft. Lauderdale

 

Summary:  Instructs clients in core areas of rehabilitation teaching for persons who are blind or visually impaired.  Clients may or may not have additional handicapping conditions. Clients may be age 14 or older.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Provide instruction to individuals in the core areas:  Communication Systems (Braille, handwriting, recording skills, use of electronic reading systems, use of assistive technology and computer access technology, etc), Personal Management (grooming, hygiene, clothing organization, socialization skills, etc.), Home Management (organization and labeling, repair and home maintenance, budgeting and record keeping, etc.) Activities of Daily Living (cooking, cleaning, shopping, safety, money organization and management, etc.), Leisure and Recreation (hobbies, woodworking, crafts, sports, etc.), Medical Management (assessment and instruction and training  of adaptive medical equipment), and Basic Indoor Orientation and Mobility Skills (sighted guide, safety techniques, etc.), basic psycho-social adjustment-to-blindness principles.

Provide comprehensive assessment in all areas of the core skills.

Assist in the development and implementation of an individualized instructional plan for each client.

Develop and maintain lesson plans for instructional purposes;

Provide training in the classroom, home or other community location as appropriate;

Maintain appropriate records, gather essential data, and other information to prepare periodic reports reflecting progress, evaluation, problems, plans and specific recommendations;

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

A Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (or foreign equivalent, as verified through an independent credential evaluation company), with a specialization in the area of Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), Occupational Therapy (OT) or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, from an accrediting body at the time the degree or program of study was granted or completed, is preferred.   

Certificates and Licenses:

Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapy ACVREP certification within one year of hire is preferred or COTA/ OT certification with five or more years experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic Microsoft Word and Excel and email/Internet software.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job may supervise Assistive Technology Instructors as required in some contracts.
